Phobies is, in its very core, the best tactics game you will find on mobile.
Phobies feel like chess, but plays on various battlefields, and with an insane amount of pieces, from which a lot have special abilities as well.
A special highlight is live pvp in real-time or asynchronous, which makes Phobies stand stand out amongst the crowd, and every recent match from every player can be observed.
So far, Phobies would be my favourite tactics game of all time.
There is one (huge) downside, though: players are not matched by their overall card-strenght, but loosely by their rankings, which leads to a very bad matchmaking, and hilarious pay2win elements:
Phobies do not only need to be collected, and come in four rarities, but can also be upgraded until lv 30 (i think), so the better you play, and the higher you get, the bigger your disadvantages will be.
Its not as bad as in other f2p games, as there is a monthly or yearly subscription, and there are regulair events with great () awards, so with aproximately 15 - 20 Euro/Dollar per month and enough playtime, you can expect steady progress.
But, be sure to bring a well developed frustration-resilience when you start playing Phobies:
I had a match where i ( level 15) was matched against an level 101! That means:
Far more and faaaaar stronger Phobies on my opponent's side, and thats pretty common for new players. You will have lots of matches, that are just unwinnable or extremely disadvantageous. In fact, i autoconcede about 3 out of 4 matches, because it wouldnt make sense to even try. Yes, as great as Phobies basically is:
It is a nightmare for new players!
Which, of course, makes rankings and winrates basically senseless, and often, i ask myself, what i am doing at all, playing such a frustrating game...
The answer, for me, is simple: because i purchased the yearly subscription.
And yet, there simply isnt any other tactics game on mobile (other than chess), that isnt completely pay2win, at least as far as i know. By which i mean: At least there is a cap on your phobies' strenghts, although new players will never come even close to it...
Summarizing, Phobies, in its core, is an amazing experience for mobile players that like board games with simple and intuitive rules, yet lots of content and amazing depth.
At the same time, Phobies offers one of the worst new-player experiences that i could imagine:
Facing other low-level players leads to boring matches with little opportunities, and facing mid to high-level players is simply unfair and frustrating.
Which causes most new players to spend a good amount of money right from the start, so i do wholeheartedly NOT recommend Phobies to free2play players and/or people with little stress resilience. If you're willing to keep spending money and time, tough, until you have healthily grown your collection, Phobies can evolve into an amazong tactical experience...
