It could be described as a roguelike survival shooter game with a basic title ‘20 Minutes Till Dawn’ that can be ed, it captures you with its simplicity but will not let you go with its complexity. The main goal of the game is to defeat tens of thousands of waves of enemies in twenty minutes and every moment to count while shooting, dodging and modifying weapons during the battle. They say it lookslike child’s play at best because most of the models are 8-bit pixel-art, but after a while, it becomes Bliss to focus only on the action on the screen.
The gameplay is straightforward: while you change your positions in the game you use one joystick and you fire using the other one. The game really gets interesting when you unlock new characters and new guns among other thing. All of the characters however possess certain skills that can greatly help alter your gameplay and strategies. For instance, there are characters who are really good in controlling large crowds while others are best at taking down individuals. There is also the implication of armed forces in the selection of different upgrades and abilities available between waves of an opponent. The upgrading is different every time and the runs feel entirely different because of the variation it allows.
Another advantage that can be mentioned is an excellent level of difficulty. With such mighty enhancements implemented the game does not allow you to have a calm moment. The never ending waves of enemies do keep pumping and you do not get any opportunity to sit back and relax. However, this might not always bear some fruits as we may find it difficult to do this as you will see below. Others may possibly be additionally annoyed as they struggle to make their ways through except on subsequent times when they have a clue on what to do.
Pros:
✔ Roguelike gameplay that keeps on changing – Every run is going to be varied since combinations of upgrades and character abilities are diverse.
✔ Simple but challenging mechanisms – Twin-stick shooter controls are easy to learn but difficult to master.
✔ Different playing styles – Crowd control vs. monospecialist damage by skill, weapon combo, or character.
✔ Such addictive progression – It makes survival very rewarding, which is why it fuels replay value.
Definitely pixel-art visuals – They enhance an already very nostalgic yet immersive atmosphere with the gameplay as they are retro.
Cons:
✖ High difficulty curve – New players can be completely overwhelmed by pure enemy waves.
✖ Can get repetitive – Although upgrades change the game around, the core gameplay loop becomes stale at some point.
✖ No time to chill – Without breaks, the fast-paced nature in essence leaves nothing for the pleasantries which some may find frustrating.
✖ Randomized upgrades: Luck will qualify on the upgrades you will receive and affects strategies and success.
As you may have noticed, 20 Minutes Till Dawn is very difficult, but it is not hard to get hooked on the game. Getting through the entire 20 minutes brings a sense of achievement which will make you want to play it over again for one more round. Whether or not you’re an enthusiast of roguelikes 20 Minutes Till Dawn is a game worth a try speciaaly when you seek a challenge to your reaction and planning skills.
