NieR Re[in]carnation β Game Review
Translate
To a great extent, it is indeed an end to this short sojourn to the NieR Universe yet again, by invading this Rome-like everything of a beautifully wrapped world, deep storytelling, and engaging combat mechanics-not given an exception to the melancholic and philosophical thematic epitomes of the series. Unfortunately-refully for all the beautiful words to describe the game, an official announcement states that the game will be closing shop; probably citing player retention issues or lack of revenues as the cause.
Gameplay & Features
Innovation by Square Enix in NieR Re[in]carnation is creating this mobile RPG in the same world as NieR wherein the turn-based combat is incorporated into automated battles with intelligent party formations. Players will play a young girl guided by a floating entity called Mama as they discover a strange and surreal world named The Cage.
This is stunning aesthetics and sound, comprising a breathtakingly composed soundtrack by Keiichi Okabe while carrying on to cradle the main ambiance with the title "NieR."
Profound and Emotional Stories - The story goes as existential and tragic characters are, as is the case with all the other nieR titles.
Turn-Based Combat with Auto-Battle - Battle can be strategy oriented, yet automatically battle, some players enjoy, but others feel it's too ive/complacent.
Gacha System for Characters & Weapons - A game based on gacha, in which players pull out characters and weapons thus making one part of the way through the game rely on luck.
Pros & Cons
Pros
β Beautiful visuals & atmospheric world β True to the aesthetic of the NieR series, the game gives hauntingly beautiful landscapes along with stunning character designs.
β Emotional & thought-provoking story β The narrative develops some deep themes of loss, redemption, and existentialism, thus attracting an audience for story-driven RPGs.
β Fabulous music & sound deg β The orchestral score and voice acting heightened the emotional depth of the game.
β Easy controls & smooth combat mechanics β The turn-based battle system is easy to learn, automated for casual players.
β Frequent updates & special events β The game had the most regular limited-time events that featured new characters and challenges.
Cons:
β Over-reliant on gacha mechanics - Randomized character and weapon summoning make it really hard to get powerful units as a free player.
β Slow pace & Repetitive gameplay - Some players allegedly found the exploration and combat loop to be either slow or repetitive over time.
β The auto-battle reduces engagement - Though idealistic for casual players, the auto-battle mode renders combat ive for those who hunt a challenge.
β Monetization and in-app purchases- The game also had a currency and microtransactions with a high price which could be frustrating for non-paying players.
β Game shut down announcement- The game is shut down officially, and now new players will hesitate to invest time or money in it.
Limited-Time Events & Crossover - NieR Re[in]carnation could have held more events with events that featured crossovers with NieR: Automata and NieR Replicant, which brought your favorite characters like 2B, 9S, and Kaine to the game.
Final Thoughts
NieR Re[in]carnation was an ambitious mobile RPG that managed to capture the aesthetics, music, and storytelling depth of the NieR franchise. Yet the gacha-based monetization system, slow pace of organization, and auto-battle combat mechanics turn it into a very controversial experience. While NieR fans appreciated the world-building and emotional impact of the game, the imminent shutdown of this one signaled that it couldn't hold a sustainable player base. For the lovers of the NieR world, the game was definitely a beautiful-but-short-lived experience.
