ONLYWAY: A Haunting Post-Disaster Puzzle Adventure
Translate
"ONLYWAY" by JEVO Games pushes players into a post-disaster darkness filled with mystery, terror, and hardness. The idea is pretty simple but—at the same time—so catchy: to get through the eating environment, the main thing is to survive. In such a way, it gives a unique experience of adventure, horror, and solving puzzles.
The arts in "ONLYWAY" are very minimalistic; it's eerie, a build-up of foreboding. Dark, moody environments fuel the feeling of being isolated and the danger element, making one really feel they are on the move through a world that has collapsed. Such gloomy and chilling structures, haunting sights—these pull one into the discouraging tones of the game.
Its puzzle design is one of the high points of this game: challenging but intuitive, requiring great critical thinking in order to progress. It is quite fitting into the game and doesn't become frustratingly tough for the casual as well as professional gamers. Each time you manage to solve one of them, it feels good because it makes you feel accomplished with opening up new paths and learning more about the world.
Controls in this game are pretty simple and hence easy to learn, which allows players to pay more attention to solving puzzles and exploring locations. Though the movement of the character may feel a bit stiff at times, by no means does this detract from the experience but furthers the slow-paced, deliberate exploration it encourages.
Unlike in narrative respects, "ONLYWAY" does it in a more subtle manner. Most of the story is actually told through the environment and atmosphere surrounding you—a world full of eeriness. It doesn't really need much in heavy dialogue; the atmosphere itself makes out a strong story of survival and desolation.
PROS & CONS OF "ONLYWAY" BY JEVO GAMES
✅Pros
✅Immersion – The game dips players into the environment which is dark, moody, and heavy enough to provoke isolation and unhappiness, elevating the horror experience.
✅Minimalist But Effective Art Style – An almost eerily beautiful presentation contributes to the unsettlingly ghastly atmosphere: the places feel downcast and filled with unanswered questions.
✅Excellent Puzzles – The puzzles are hard yet obvious, leaving players with some sense of accomplishment without the soul-crushing frustration.
✅Good Environmental Storytelling – The game communicates its story more through atmosphere rather than dialogue, encouraging exploration and interpretation.
✅Simple Mechanics, Easy to Use – Mechanics that are easy to learn let the player truly engage in the experience instead of worrying about complex input.
✅Slowing Down Exploration – Promotes slow movement, responsible navigation, enhancing tension and immersion.
❌Cons
❌Movement of Characters Feels Rigged – It may seem to some players like the controls respond a little sluggishly, despite fitting with the slow pace of exploring.
❌Minimal Conventional Storytelling – The lack of, say, direct storytelling or dialogue might give this entire experience an unlikely appeal for players seeking a linear narrative experience.
❌Darkness Generally Won't Appeal to Everyone – For some, the constant grim tone and aesthetic may become boring after a while given that they crave variation when it comes to environments.
❌Very Little Action – Players expecting combat or fast-paced encounters will be disappointed.
If you're a fan of atmospheric games, really smart puzzles, and horror-filled exploration, then you'll probably not want to miss "ONLYWAY." It's quite a something from start to finish.
